Your home can go
from a spark to a cinder in 30 minutes. Within 3
minutes your ceiling temperatures are 800 degrees!
The average time it takes you (or a neighbor) to realize you have a fire is 20
minutes. The average time it takes for the fire department to respond once
notified is 7 minutes. (Add that up, there's not a lot they can do.)
With Automatic Reporting we save the 20 minutes! Therefore, saving lives, heartaches,
memories, and aggravation. This cuts down response time by 75%! That is the
difference between losing your kitchen or everything you own! Fire protection is
"on" even if you have your system turned "off". Whether you are
home or away, the central station will be alerted instantly.
Do You Have A
Fire Escape Plan?
Since most fires occur during the
hours of midnight and 6:00 AM (when most people are sleeping), it's important to know how
to respond in the event of a fire.
DO NOT JUMP UP! Fire requires oxygen in order to grow. As it is consuming the
oxygen in your home, it is omitting very deadly, toxic gases, the most common of which is
Carbon Monoxide. Since carbon monoxide is lighter than oxygen, it starts at ceiling level
and gradually works its way down as it replaces the oxygen in your home. Roll out of bed, crawl to the door. Feel it with the back of your
hand. If it is hot, DO NOT OPEN IT! (You will have to go out a window) It is a good idea to have chain ladders handy if your bedroom is
not on ground level. If you do have to go out the
window, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE A BREATH BEFORE YOU STAND UP. Taking a breath of air at head level, and you will have 4 seconds to pass out, as
you have just filled your lungs with carbon monoxide. If the door wasn't hot, STAYING AS LOW TO THE FLOOR AS POSSIBLE, figure out the
best way to get yourself and family out.
Once outside, it is very important
to have a VERY SPECIFIC MEETING PLACE. This way you are all together. Needless tragedies can be
prevented with some advance planning. Call the fire
department. (if you don't have a security system) If possible, wait by the fire hydrant. DO NOT GO BACK IN UNDER
ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!
